A slam dunk park sign
Helping a community that pitched in so everyone could practice their shots.

BRIEF
OBJECTIVE
Create a sign, using the existing community brand guidelines, to thank and acknowledge donors who made possible a community’s new basketball court. Convey a sense of collective ownership and belonging, and promote the new sport court’s respectful use.
AUDIENCE
Visitors to the public park, including community residents and city-wide residents. The inclusive design of this small, 3-basket circular basketball court allows people of different ages and abilities to play and participate in the community. It promotes not just physical activity, which is essential to well-being, but also a sense of belonging, which builds community spirit and cultivates joy.
BACKGROUND
Basketball is one of the fastest-growing sports in Canada. The City of Calgary and the Parks Foundation Calgary, with the support of various organizations, as well as corporate and individual donors, built a basketball court in the inner-city community of Bridgeland.
MESSAGING
- Acknowledge the grassroots nature of this project and the donors that made it possible.
- Expand on existing brand guidelines and the friendly Bridgeland Betty community persona’s voice.
- Promote inclusion by conveying an inviting, inclusive, warm, and respectful community feeling.
DELIVERABLES
Print-ready files to client specifications and web-ready files for the community to share on their website and social media channels.
RESULTS
The basketball sports court has become a beloved Bridgeland landmark.
On any given day, if there is no snow on the ground, there are typically several groups of people of all ages and abilities shooting hoops. If you walk by Murdoch Park, you will hear Calgarians encourage each other’s basketball skills in many languages, and share a good laugh in the universal human language of connection and community.
